What is Sustainable Construction and Design? Let’s talk Sustainable Building Materials

Jul 25, 2022 | News

Sustainable construction is the practice of using energy efficient methods and materials to reduce the ecological impact of commercial and residential structures.

Sustainable building incorporates contractors, suppliers, architects, engineers and individuals working together at every level to ensure each stage of the project meets performance, safety standards and building codes – while supporting the environment. Green principles can be adopted throughout the entire build including:

  • Planning
  • Site Development
  • Design and architecture
  • Sustainable building materials (manufacturing, importing and exporting)
  • Energy consumption (gas, water and electricity)
  • Building new structures
  • Renovating existing structures
  • Demolition
  • Water management

Sustainable building materials are sources from renewable sources or can be recycled easily. These include such items and bio based timber conditioners and finishes (think Quantum Timber Finishes), green thermal insulation, structural insulated panels, cool roofs, recycled metal, engineered timber and reclaimed timber, precast concrete slabs, bamboo and cork.

What is a certified Green Building?

Green buildings incorporate sustainable measures at every stage of the project. The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) implements strict guidelines for green start certification at every level. Although a voluntary rating system, the GBCA can be used as a guide to implement sustainability measures to your next build. Green building benefits include fewer carbon emissions, lower construction costs and return a higher property value.
